Think Twice Before You Click ‘Unsubscribe’
The firm DNSFilter found that roughly 1 in 644 clicks on these seemingly harmless links can lead to malicious websites. Beyond malware risks, clicking unsubscribe in spam messages also signals to scammers that the email address is active, potentially increasing the volume of phishing attempts and unwanted junk mail.
To minimize exposure, experts advise avoiding unsubscribe links in questionable emails. Instead, use safe alternatives such as your email client’s built-in unsubscribe function (leveraging list-unsubscribe headers in platforms like Gmail or Outlook), or simply mark the email as spam or block the sender. Additional tactics include using disposable or alias email addresses, especially when signing up for offers or newsletters, to keep your main inbox more secure.
